Although nobody outside of Sony really knows what the Playstation 4 will be capable of until it is actually released, there is some pretty interesting information out there about the possibilities. Some estimates of the technical specifications make the other game systems (and entertainment equipment in general) look like it belongs in a museum.
One very cool possibility would be motion sensing technology that attaches to both arms and legs, allowing the game to sense your every movement. This would allow game programmers making games for the Playstation 4 console to integrate movement of the arms and legs into the gameplay. For example, a swimming game would require the person playing the game to move all limbs to swim through the pool. The game could sense how quickly you are moving your arms or legs as well as the efficiency of your technique. There could even be a helmet that extends this control to your head movements.
In addition to the motion sensing, the controller might be able to shock you or blow wind depending on the things taking place in the game environment. For a game that does something like skydiving this could be a pretty amazing experience; especially if the helmet peripheral could immerse you in the audio of the game.
The Playstation 4 will probably utilize several different new technologies. For instance it might utilize wireless technologies to improve the way the different console components and peripherals interact with each other, as well as the way the console interacts with the internet. This integration could even extend to your entire entertainment system. With all of the electronic equipment communicating wirelessly, it isn't hard to imagine the Playstation 4 being the primary piece of equipment in the living room. It could act as the computer integrating all video, audio, game, and entertainment equipment into one easy to use interface.
The 1080p resolution available now will probably look much less impressive after the 2160p resolution is available with the Playstation 4. Add on the 9.1 channel sound and you have a pretty unbelievable entertainment experience in your living room. The Playstation 4 probably won't be available until 2011 at the earliest, but hopefully Sony will release some official details of the system soon. Fortunately the Playstation 3 is still a very impressive piece of equipment that probably has plenty of untapped power.
