Despite recent problems with the hacking of its PlayStation Network, Sony has stated the current consoles still have life left in them.
It has not been a good year so far for the giant Sony, when in April the PlayStation Network data breach, not only saw over 77 million PSN users data compromised, but also led to a nearly month long shutdown of the PlayStation 3 and PSPs online service, also causing the PlayStation Store to be out of commission for nearly six weeks.
Again hacking hits the headlines, when an arrest was made of a 19 year old Essex resident who has been connected with a recent wave of cyber-attacks, and police are examining the individual for any Sony data with reference to the April data breach.
The PlayStation 3 marches on, and only recently an announcement by Sony of a new version of the PlayStation 3 has certainly lifted the spirits of gamers all over the world. The new model is said to be lighter and more energy efficient, and at the moment only confirmed for a Japan release.
The current PS3 and Xbox are the longest console cycle that has been seen, and it has been reported that Sony is thinking of revealing the PlayStation 4 sometime next year. It is also reported that Sony will be assessing its gaming business before it brings out a new console, and it is thought the company will concentrate on the PS Vita, which will see the price of the PS3 reduce in cost.
Future games consoles need to be a complete entertainment system, as are coming into more competition from other platforms such as tablets and smartphones, having said that, the current lineup of consoles provides more ways to interact as well as providing users the opportunity to stream movies and music.
Sony has had a lot thrown at them this year and despite all this their design of PlayStation 3 makes it more than just a video game console.
